RAGGING IS BANNED IN IIT KGP........the truth behind the revelation

times have changed..
and times are strange..
here i come but i ain't the same..

These words were once lipped by the legend ozzy osbourne. But right now this holds true for all the things happening in my Alma-Mater..IIT Kharagpur right now..

There has been an incredible delay from my side to write anything about this topic considering the things which have happened in the past 2 weeks here. And come to think of it,times have actually changed and like the winds in the Sahara Desert,it has taken a complete U-turn.

Things which were discussed and mocked about behind closed doors are now in the open and the strings of the puppet now lies in the hands of the Director of this prestigious institute which is undoubtedly one of the very best in the whole world(come to think of it,i am having my own doubts about whether could be called so in the near future).Things like Orientation Programme of the second yr. students in the senior halls are being given disgusting names like ragging and as if this was not enough,3rd yr. students are being labelled as "terrorists" and are being sued for indulging in this activity.

But I'd want to ask the all enlightened "ragging committee" of our institute whether they actually know the truth behind what actually goes on in the premises of the so-called "terror cells for 2nd yrs."??..and do they actually know the meaning of ragging in the first place??

ragging...going by the dictionary meaning...is termed as the practice of treating people as a piece of crap..or an article of very low value or in a very poor condition.so will the prestigious and know-it-all personelle please try to explain to us when in the heaven's name have the 3rd yrs ever treated the new members of the family(which we try to make in the respective halls here)as??on the very contrary,we are used to treat them as a worty piece of the crown we all wish to crown our hall with...

the whole idea of the this OP as it is commonly known in the hostels is very simple.. bind the students as one..a a family..so that they do not know thir batchmates or the seniors as for that mattr, not as mere acquantainces but as a part of thier own family!! this "shameful" activity (as the professors like to put it) tries to make them believe that the world is not as rosy-eyed as people would like it to believe.. people perish in it just as a helpless boat does in a cyclone.it helps them to look into themselves for what they or their parents have not been able to discover..

It has to be understood that 2nd yrs. are not made to wake up at 5 am in the morning and made to run 2.2 just for mare fun of the "wily" 3rd yrs..but for their own good..and infact, the 3rd yrs themselves have to wake up at 4 in the morning to make them do so...

Weekly competitions in the hall are a things must for all the people who themselves do not know what they are capable of..things varying from creative writing compititions to software designing compititions are not what i think any terrorist would have done to the people he wants to torture!!!!

ever wondered what makes IIT stand out from all the other institutes in this country??In other places, the real essence of ragging is lost with physical excersion of the freshers which was definitely not the reason ragging was actually started in the first place. How else would u learn how to open up to your seniors and act as a brother to them?..i mean,u can't go to a complete stranger and tell them whats bugging u or ask for help..!!

How many friends could anyone make being confined in the self-made cacoon of uncertainty and self-doubt anyway??..and i can challenge my life on the fact that after one moth of intense OP session in any hall in IIT KGP,when any member of the hall is in trouble, the hall stands by him...no matter how big is the problem!!!
the phrase "together we stand" is what the whole hall and hall tradition all about which....for the info...according the director.. is what hampering the institute from achieving its target!!(Target my foot..the only target i can see from my reference point is a rajya sabha seat!!!)

..and to think that the whole IIT tradition is slipping out of hand like sand just due to the folly of one 2nd year!!...

IIT KGP IS DYING...and no one can do anything about it!!!

i would have gone on and on forever but i think me writing a blog or Bhaat Sessions in Bhaaski will not do any good for us...whenever someone tries to raise a voice against the system,it is said to be silenced..either by force..or by power..But let me ask one thing..DOES A CROWD HAVE A VOICE??...NO!!!..they are shouts..shouts which cannot be supressed by anything but an action in their will!!..So guys..i think when 1000 people join hands against a system which is out to destroy its own existence,it can not only rock the NETAJI AUDITORIUM..it can also rock the system..and then..probably thw whole nation!!

Great post. But I disagree that these so called "Orientation Sessions" are only that. I have been through six years of Doon School, where people are from influential families with political strength enough to school anybody's ass. Ask people about what goes on in the Houses in Doon. We were given brutal hockey shots up our asses, but only when we let the house down in a game, we were subjected to grade-A military style physical torture, but only when we screwed up badly or broke the rules. But there was so much dignity and class in everything. If a junior was good natured, dedicated to contributing towards the House, no body would even bother him, instead probably help him make it to a big House team of some sort and appreciate all the efforts.

If a weakling was spotted, who would behave like Mr. Goody two shoes out of mummy's wings, the treatment for him would mostly be mockery, name calling and involvement intense sports, which is a fantastic way of putting a bit of confidence and "the right attitude" into such people. The most common thing would be "Take a pressup position and stay there", and that would be when the person would fail to do something properly, or with a wholehearted effort.

No one was out to humiliate a person. Everybody wanted everybody to be strong, and strength is not developed in a person by humiliating him. Unlike the IITs, nobody would ask a person to strip while others would be made to take photos, they would not be sexually assaulted because Homosexuality is hated and comdemned by the students themselves, they would not be thrown off roofs, hit with objects, victimized with sexual groping and forced actions etc. The emphasize is on developing strength and character, not humiliating them and deriving perverse pleasure.

If indeed your descriptions of Orientation are just that, then I support it wholeheartedly and testify that it is absolutely necessary. Hell with those who think otherwise. But I know for real that IIT KGP Orientation is not that. It's far far worse, and mostly perverted. The homosexual incidents are alarming, and cruel torture and humiliation inflicted on Freshers (fachchons) are all too famous for you to disguise into something as benign as orientation.

I also refuse to subscribe to the crap that IIT KGP (or Any IIT for that matter) is the best (or even one of the best institutions) in the world. I once thought that I'm inferior since I did not make it to the IITs, but today a lot of IITans work as juniors to me. By the way, I'm in a Fortune 10 with a huge Indian employee pool, so no extrapolations there. Most of the exceptional people are not IITans, but people from Yale and Princeton. I have also noticed that people from MIT Boston are also not all that exceptional as hyped about. The 6 most brilliant workers we have here are all from Princeton and Yale. And consider that fact our Company recruits from your campus every year, and in all other IITs as well. Pretty evident patterns, eh?

The problem with us humans is that we lie to ourselves more than we lie to others. It took me a long time to realize that. Have a good day.
